Compare Differences Between the 2016 Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 to Find the Right Model for You
2016 Mazda CX-5 Compared to 2016 Mazda CX-9
If you’re in the hunt for a new SUV, your list of options just got a little longer with the introduction of Mazda’s all-new CX-9 midsize SUV. This means drivers interested in one of Mazda’s impressive SUVs now have a decision to make. We’ll show you a number of differences between the 2016 Mazda CX-5 compared to the 2016 Mazda CX-9 to help you decide.
2016 Mazda CX-5 vs CX-9 Engine Specs and Performance
Let’s start with the engine. Mazda has developed a brand new turbocharged SKYACTIV engine for the CX-9, delivering plenty of power but boosting fuel efficiency.
| 2016 Mazda CX-5 | 2016 Mazda CX-9 |
|---|---|
| 2.0/2.5-liter SKYACTIV, 4-cyl. | 2.5-liter SKYACTIV turbocharged |
| 155/184 horsepower | 250 horsepower |
| 150/185 lb-ft of torque | 310 lb-ft of torque |
| 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with manual shift mode | 6-speed automatic |
| Up to 26 city/35 hwy mpg | MPG increase of an estimated 20% over 2015 model |
The obvious difference between the two is engine power, so if 310 lb-ft of torque available at a low 2,000 rpm is something you want, then the CX-9 could be just what you’re looking for. Drivers who don’t need that much power or who want a manual transmission, however, may fit best with the CX-5.
2016 Mazda CX-5 vs CX-9 Cargo and Passenger Space

As expected, the CX-9’s larger size will allow for more passenger and cargo space than the CX-5, though both models should be plenty spacious. The new CX-9 will seat 7, while the 2016 CX-5 has a seating capacity of 5.
Of course, with a larger size comes more cargo space. Despite the 2016 CX-9 being just a little shorter than its predecessor, we still expect impressive cargo room like the 2015 CX-9’s 100.7 cu ft. The 2016 Mazda CX-5 offers up to 65.4 cu ft.
2016 Mazda CX-5 vs CX-9 Trim Levels

The previous CX-9 has roughly the same trim level layout as the CX-5: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. On the 2016 Mazda CX-5, the top level trim delivers such features as heated side mirrors, leather-trimmed sport seats and a power sliding-glass moonroof, which is plenty of luxury for many drivers. Those who want even more sophistication, however, may want to wait for the CX-9’s new Signature trim that adds details like rosewood trim on the center console, Auburn Nappa leather seats and aluminum decorating the dashboard flanked by Auburn accents.
While drivers looking for a smaller and sportier SUV offering excellent fuel economy may be better suited for the CX-5, those looking for more cargo and passenger space, more premium options and a powerful engine may want to wait for the CX-9’s arrival.
