What Should You Do If Your Mazda Overheats?

If you notice a high engine coolant temperature, a loss of power, a loud pinging sound or steam coming out from underneath the hood, it’s possible that your car’s engine has overheated. So, what should you do if your Mazda overheats? It’s a question you don’t want to be asking, but we’ll guide you through the steps you should take to safely take care of yourself and your vehicle.

Mazda High Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light

One common sign that the engine is overheating is a high engine coolant temperature warning light illuminated in the instrument cluster. If you see it lit up, here’s what you should do:

1. Pull over once it is safe to do so, and then, shift into park and apply the parking brake.
2. If the air conditioner is on, turn it off.
3. From here, your next steps will depend on whether you notice steam or coolant coming from the engine compartment.
4. If you see steam: Turn the engine off and stay away from the engine compartment. Allow the area to cool down and for the steam to dissipate.
5. If you see no steam: You may carefully open the hood to allow the engine to cool while it idles. You can safely check to make sure the cooling fan is operating. Turn off the engine once the temperature has gone down or if the cooling fan is not functioning.

Adding Engine Coolant to Your Mazda

A low coolant level is a common cause of an overheating vehicle. Once the engine has cooled, you should check the coolant.

1. Wait until the engine compartment is cool before checking the coolant level.
2. The coolant should be between the F and L marks in the reservoir. If the level appears low or empty, check for leaks from the radiator and hoses. If this is more than you’re comfortable with, or you spot leaks, be sure to contact your nearby Mazda dealer.
3. If you do not find any leaks, but the coolant level is low, you should add enough coolant to bring the reservoir level to F. Be sure to add the correct type of coolant for your vehicle.
