Mazda Reveals 2016 CX-9’s Best-In-Class Combined MPG Rating
2016 Mazda CX-9 Drivetrain Options and Gas Mileage
Mazda has finally released fuel economy figures for the all-new 2016 CX-9 midsize SUV, and as expected, efficiency has improved greatly over the preceding model. In fact, the model’s efficiency improvements are so significant that it has launched the CX-9 to the top of the list as a class leader for both city and combined mpg. Let’s take a look at the 2016 Mazda CX-9’s drivetrain options and gas mileage figures for each.
New Mazda CX-9 FWD and AWD Fuel Economy Ratings
The 2016 CX-9 comes in either a FWD or i-ACTIV AWD configuration. The i-ACTIV AWD system is a predictive one. It’s capable of measuring road conditions 200 times per second and predicting when wheel slippage will occur, rather than just reacting to it. The system monitors conditions like ambient temperature, steering wheel angle, longitudinal grip, windshield wiper movement and brake fluid pressure.
Despite how capable the i-ACTIV system is, the new CX-9’s gas mileage remains impressive, whether operating with FWD or AWD. Here is how the FWD and AWD fuel economy figures compare for the new CX-9, as well as how these numbers compare to the 2015 model.
| Model | FWD (city/highway/combined) | AWD (city/highway/combined) |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 CX-9 | 22/28/25 | 21/27/23 |
| 2015 CX-9 | 17/24/19 | 16/22/18 |
According to Mazda, this shift in fuel economy amounts to a 32 percent improvement in fuel efficiency for the new CX-9 compared to its predecessor. This is thanks in part to a new turbocharged SKYACTIV engine delivering up to 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, as well as a weight reduction of 198 lbs. with FWD and 287 lbs. with AWD.

2016 Mazda CX-9 Gas Mileage Compared to Other Midsize SUVs
Like we said, this fuel economy improvement makes the 2016 CX-9 the best in its class of non-hybrid, midsize, 3-row crossovers for both city and combined mpg. When comparing gas mileage specs between models, it’s clear just how significant Mazda’s achievement of producing a fuel efficient, yet powerful, midsize SUV really is.
| Model | FWD (city/highway/combined) | AWD (city/highway/combined) |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 Mazda CX-9 | 22/28/25 | 21/27/23 |
| 2016 Honda Pilot | 20/27/23 | 19/26/22 |
| 2016 Ford Explorer | 19/28/22 | 18/26/21 |
| 2016 Nissan Pathfinder | 20/27/23 | 19/26/22 |
| 2016 Toyota Highlander | 20/25/22 | 18/24/20 |
| 2016 Buick Enclave | 17/24/19 | 16/22/18 |
The 2016 Mazda CX-9 drivetrain options and gas mileage show that this all-new midsize SUV is capable of remaining efficient when operating as either a family hauler or when traversing rough roadways.
